Formal higher education, yes. But I disagree in what concerns education in a broad sense.
The migration from rural to urban areas dismembers community and therefore cultural references are lost from one generation to the next. I have seen this in various countries where I have travelled and lived, such as Portugal, India and Ecuador.
Talking about the majority of population and not about minorities, people from the countryside are more structured with a stronger set of values. If they give you their word you can trust them, while in urban areas people tend not to be so trustworthy.
In the cities many have lost their cultural references and most of adult education is given by a very low educational mass media - TV, where most watched channels do not educate at all and only entertain with a very low set of values and violence.
If TV has such an important role in many people's lives shouldnt it be an educational media? Otherwise the violence and wrong values you see on TV will be what you will see on society later on.
So if governments are so thoughtful in what concerns policies to control birth rates, shouldnt they be as thoughtful when it comes to educate their populations? I am not talking about lack of freedom (although many governments already control several mass media) but option of quality educational TV and cutting down on violence the same way as you cut down on pornography.

Um Templo para Monsanto
Este é um projeto que considero de grande valor e com o qual estou a colaborar através de consultoria em Marketing e Comunicação, em regime de voluntariado.A Câmara Municipal de Lisboa cedeu à União Budista Portuguesa (UBP) um espaço em Monsanto, para a construção de um templo, espaço de meditação e outras actividades, que estará aberto a toda a população.
Este Templo intitula-se "Casa da Paz" e pretende ser um espaço de referência na cultura da paz e do diálogo entre povos, culturas e religiões, um espaço onde qualquer um pode meditar, rezar, ou simplesmente estar em silêncio.

Comunidade traz felicidade
Comunidade = grupo de pessoas que se entre-ajudam

Neste momento vivo na Graça e nunca senti tanto espírito comunitário como aqui. Muitos amigos vivem no bairro, os vizinhos são super prestáveis e conhecemos muita gente no comércio local.
Uma vizinha fica com o gato para outra poder ir de férias, uns amigos emprestam o carro, outra abre a porta aos turistas que vêem para ficar uns dias, o escadote da vizinha do segundo andar evitou despesas extra e o berbequim de uns amigos facilitou uns trabalhos lá em casa. A pequenota brinca com a vizinha em vez de ficar em casa sem outros meninos para brincar.
Nem todas estas situações se passaram conosco, mas passam-se aqui na nossa comunidade.
E é por isto que não vivemos numa casa maior nos subúrbios, isolados das pessoas que estão em nosso redor. Também existem subúrbios com comunidade, mas é aqui que estão os nossos amigos.
O dinheiro ajuda à felicidade, a partir do momento em que nos permite ter uma casa para habitar e sustentar-nos confortavelmente, mas é uma perfeita ilusão pensar que o acumular de bens e de riqueza traz felicidade.
A comunidade sim ... traz felicidade
Se conhecemos quem vive em nosso redor não temos medo de sair à rua, há sempre uma mão amiga e a confiança estabelece-se.
O medo é o oposto de confiança e quanto mais estabelecemos laços de confiança com os outros ... menos medo temos, somos mais fortes.

Nas comunidades tradicionais as pessoas ajudavam-se umas às outras, e os laços eram fortes.
A partir do momento em que tudo se faz por dinheiro, paga-se qualquer serviço necessário e instala-se a desigualdade social.
Quem tem dinheiro pode pagar todos os serviços e produtos, quem não tem dinheiro é posto à margem da sociedade. E numa sociedade assim, as relações sociais deixam de ter a importância que tinham ...
... a troca de serviços e de produtos que alimentava os laços sociais entre a comunidade deixa de existir.
A actual crise económica está a reavivar algumas práticas de trocas e o tecido social fica mais forte.
É bom que as pessoas em dificuldades abram a porta e estabeleçam laços com a comunidade em redor e não se isolem, sofrendo em solidão. É a atitude das pessoas perante os acontecimentos que pode converter os acontecimentos em algo de positivo para a sua vida.
E se a televisão e os restantes meios de comunicação aumentam o medo em nós ... então desliga.
O medo paralisa, enquanto que a confiança nos permite agir ... e sorrir.
Qual é a utilidade de uma pessoa informada e paralisada?

Sonhar é preciso!
E o mundo de amanhã pode ser aquilo que sonharmos, é só necessário acreditar, viver com confiança e aplicar os nossos valores e princípios em tudo aquilo que fazemos.
Neste sentido quero partilhar convosco e lançar para o Universo o meu mundo de amanhã, pelo qual estou disposta a avançar passo a passo no sentido da sua concretização.

200 países, 200 anos, 4 minutos
Acabei de ver um video que impressiona pela quantidade de informação processada e pela tecnologia utilizada (ver youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Qe9Lw_nlFQU), mas que não aborda a verdadeira riqueza ds povos nem a sua verdadeira qualidade de vida.
Um americano que viva num bairro de lata de uma grande cidade com 100 dolares por mês é considerado mais rico do que um moçambicano que viva numa aldeia sem dinheiro nenhum.
O primeiro não tem acesso a um sistema de saúde, nem comida de qualidade para se alimentar, o segundo tem acesso a todos os recursos gratuitos que a natureza lhe dá, come bem, respira um ar sem poluição, mas isto não é contabilizado.
Os recursos naturais que temos ao nosso dispôr e que usamos têm de ser contabilizados, essa é a verdadeira riqueza, não o dinheiro, que é apenas virtual, e que sofre flutuações ao sabor do mercado financeiro.
Parece-me um pouco impossível que um magnata com centenas de milhares de dólares tenha qualidade de vida sem um ar limpo para respirar e comida saudável para comer.
A biodversidade é a única e verdadeira riqueza de que dispomos e que nos pode trazer qualidade de vida.
Chegou a hora de começar a falar da verdadeira sustentabilidade do planeta.

Num mundo em que se fazem fortunas à custa da apropriação do bem comum é fundamental reconhecer quais sãos os bens comuns da humanidade que devem ser defendidos enquanto tal.
A água, as praias, os recursos que permitem a subsistência sustentável dos povos, as sementes, o sol, o vento, o território que é utilizado pela comunidade, sem apropriação. São tudo bens comuns cuja apropriação só pode levar a situações de desigualdades sociais e conflito.
Só defendendo os bens comuns podemos caminhar para uma sociedade onde impera a paz, a liberdade e a justiça social.

Aprender Inglês com Yoga e Movimento
Estou neste momento a utilizar o Yoga como ferramenta para ensinar Inglês aos mais pequenitos (4 e 5 anos) na Creche do Centro Social Paroquial de N Sra da Encarnação.
Foi o desafio de ensinar Inglês a crianças desta idade que me levou a criar este novo formato de ensino, em que o movimento é associado às palavras que vamos aprendendo. Desta forma torna-se mais simples memorizar as palavras e desenvolvemos, em simultâneo, a atenção, a respiração e o equilibrio. As posturas de yoga que fazemos também permitem o fluir da energia no nosso corpo, evitando bloqueios e, consequentemente, estados de doença.
É fundamental treinar a atenção desde pequenos, de uma forma divertida, treinar a estar presentes no momento. As crianças conseguem fazer isto melhor que ninguém, mas se o seu treino for só no sentido contrário - no sentido da dispersão, então perdem uma capacidade que é preciosa para toda a sua vida.
Esta está a ser uma experiência muito gratificante e que tem tido um excelente feedback, que chegou até mim através das próprias crianças, das educadoras, da Diretora da Creche e dos pais.

Yoga and Politics
I have the urge to talk about politics, about the present situation that we are living in Portugal and I question myself - what does Yoga got to do with politics?Simple. The path of Yoga is a path on the search for truth, compassion and unity.
Yoga should permeate all aspects of your life, as it is a way of living, much broader than a physical activity.
And you cannot close your eyes when it is clear that politicians tell one thing today in Portugal and another thing tomorrow in the European Union quarters. You cannot ignore when decisions are made behind closed doors, in Portugal and in the European Union, serving the interests of a few major companies with thirst for power and profit without regarding the most basic values of life, like food sovereignty.
On the Portuguese political scenario, I advise you to see the speech of the Leader of the Portuguese Bar Association (Lawyers Official Association) who says "Corruption has spread to all levels of the Portuguese State"
I could only find it in Portuguese, but it would be very important to have an English version.
On the European Union behind doors, I advise you to get informed about the issue of Patents on Animals and Plants.
On the 18th April the European Union intends to approve an European Directive on creating a monopoly of seeds for agriculture - so that the only allowed seeds will be the ones sold by a small number of companies. This Directive puts our biodiversity at stake and the farmers on the hands of these companies.

When I read a good book and find in it ideas that should be spread I just cant help it but to share the information.
The book The Spirit Level – Why Equality is Better for Everyone, by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, takes a wide range of social studies in order to assess inequality and its implications in modern societies across the globe.
Am I looking stupid?
“By the standards of any previous society, we have become highly self-conscious, obsessed with how we appear to others, worried that we might come across as unattractive, boring, stupid or whatever, and constantly trying to manage the impressions we make. And the core of our interactions with strangers is our concern at the social judgments and evaluations they might make: how do they rate us, did we give a good account of ourselves? This vulnerability is part of the modern psychological condition and feeds directly into consumerism.” We then buy goods that will make a good impression on others.
INEQUALITY INCREASES EVALUATION ANXIETIES
“Instead of accepting each other as equals on the basis of our common humanity as we might in more equal settings, getting the measure of each other becomes more important as status differences widen. We come to see social position as a more important feature of a person´s identity.”

Festival Andanças 2010

Algum balanço...
Vânia Cunha • 35 anos • Voluntária no Jornal Andanças
Foi o meu primeiro Andanças e posso dizer que foi cansativo e
divertido. O que mais me deliciou foram as pessoas, a comunicação
e afectividade dentro desta comunidade que se junta uma vez por
ano. Mas o Andanças não morre aqui, permeia a vida daqueles que
partilham experiências, danças, vidas, durante esta semana fora da
vida, e tão vivida, que é o Andanças.
Quem acompanha o Andanças há alguns anos conta que há quem
tenha começado na Produção e passado para a Animação com as
crianças, há quem se tenha tornado bailarino e criado uma rede de
contactos que levaram a uma mudança de carreira.
O Andanças não morre aqui.
Ainda hoje uma colega da redacção do jornal me dizia “O que será
da minha vida depois do Andanças?” Não sei, a mudança pode ser
rápida ou ir crescendo dentro de nós.
Nós somos seres que necessitam de constantes trocas com o exterior
e quando estamos em terreno fértil de partilha e afectividade sentimo-nos
florescer e as nossas potencialidades desabrocham.
Comunidade e Individualidade é possível (e necessária) para sermos
felizes. É o individualismo que nos afasta dos outros e de nós mesmos.
O Andanças é uma oportunidade de estarmos a viver lado a lado,
diariamente, durante uma semana. É também uma oportunidade
de pensarmos como podemos viver mais em comunidade no nosso
dia-a-dia, durante o ano. E, por último, uma oportunidade de reflexão
sobre um estilo de vida mais sustentável a nível ambiental, em que
o lixo não tem de ser encarado como tal e pode ser um recurso para
outras criações.
O Andanças reforçou, sem dúvida, a minha opinião de que as
experiências que mais nos marcam são aquelas vividas em
comunidade.

The Actions belong to you, the results dont
...
A good training is trying to look at reality from an objective point of view, putting the conditioning aside.
Think carefully ... when you act ... the actions belong to you,
but once they are launch to the universe, there are so many people
and happenings that may influence the output of your actions,
that you may not call them yours any longer.
Some people work hard for a specific result, some others are lucky
and things just happen to them.
Should the first person think "I am no good" and the second person
think he is the king of the universe?
I dont think so, and that is also what old texts on yoga teach you.
Do not get attached to the results of your actions as they do not belong to you.
These thoughts are quite freeing, as you start paying close attention to your actions but then release them to the universe, as you cannot predict the result, when there are so many conditionings and influences out there.

Biotechnology proponents have argued repeatedly that GM seeds are crucial to feed the world, using the same flawed reasoning that was advanced for decades by the proponents of the Green Revolution. Conventional food production, they maintain, will not keep pace with the growing world population. Monsanto's ads proclaimed in 1998: “Worrying about starving future generations won't feed them. Food biotechnology will.” As agroecologists Miguel Altieri and Peter Rosset point out, this argument is based on two erroneous assumptions. The first is that world hunger is caused by a global shortage of food; the second is that genetic engineering is the only way to increase food production.
In their classic study, World Hunger: Twelve Myths, development specialists Frances Moore Lappé and her colleagues at the Institute for Food and Development Policy gave a detailed account of world food production that surprised many readers. They showed that abundance, not scarcity, best describes the food supply in today's world. During the past three decades, increases in global food production have outstripped world population growth per 16 per cent.
The root causes of hunger around the world are unrelated to food production. They are poverty, inequality and lack access to food and land. People go hungry because the means to produce and distribute food are controlled by the rich and powerful: world hunger is not a technical but a political problem.
